The Fjord

The Fjord of Furore is a unique, natural refuge because of its beauty. It lies like a deep inlet between Conca, Agerola and Furore and the river Schiato runs through it.

This deep crevice on the AMALFI coast line creates an almost Dolomitic panorama, broken only by the crystaline waters of the Tirrenean sea, whose waves crash all along its shore. The Fjord was etc.

Once this inlet was a fisherman's village, only to be subsequenthy abbandoned. Now it has been fully revived and it runs down to the sea where there is a lovely beach, as the Ancient village, amill, Paper factory, Spandituro and Limekiln.

The Ancient Village

A picturesque group of little

houses, dominating the shoreline, embedded into the mountainside, forms the ancient fisherman's village.

These buildings, called monazeni (from the Greek "to live in solitude"), make up a unique architectural ensemble which allow for a perfect immersion into the environment as well as a wonderful place to rest.

The magical atmosphere of Italian post-war cinema still echoes among it's many stairways. Anna Magnani and Roberto Rossellini came to the Fjord to film "Il Miracolo" a central scene in the film "L'amore", and, fascinated by the beauty of the place, stayed in two of these tiny abodes which have, since then, been ironically renamed Villa della Storta and Villa del Dottore. The memory of their illustrious presence still remains among the locals: the two access roads of the village were named Anna Magnani and Roberto Rossellini respectively.

The Mill - Paper factory

This is, without doubt, the most interesting structure, both in terms of typology and complexity of form.

The building, which dates back to the first half of the nineteenth century, is made up of four levels fitted out in an antique manner for flour milling and the production of the type of paper typically found in this area.

LAbituro, the room in which the miller lived, was on the mezzanine level. Today his office has become an interesting ECOMUSEUM. Inside, one can find the ancient, locally-made, stone containers for the paper pulp, tubs and canals for the water run-off. The most interesting local flowers have been catalogued in the detailed herbarium; above all the extremely rare fern Woodwardia radicans,a splendid example of pre-glacial flora. In and around the old mill, on the ather hand, an exhibition of interesting vegetables and cereals has been organised.

Lo Spandituro and the Limekiln

On the eastern side of the Fjord lies the Spandituro, a hexagonal building used in the past for storing and drying the freshly made paper. After restructuring, this area has been allocated as modern and fully fitted out Conference Rooms, seating about a hundred, and it will also be used for periodic shows and art exhibitions.

Beside it, separated by the Allisciaturo, where the paper was finished, lies the limekiln, built in a characteristically local manner with a circular roofing layout and a lowered dome and which still contains the original lime producing furnace. Today, these buildings form the Bar-Restaurant, with connecting shops for gastronomic and locally, hand-made goods.
